“The only disability in the sight of God is sin. Any other disability is irrelevant.” 1
The Seventh Day Adventist Church is a denomination that grew out of the prophetic Millerite movement in the United States during the middle years of the nineteenth century. It considers itself a branch of Protestant Christianity, though differences in doctrine and practice have led some mainstream Christians to dispute that designation. The name of the church indicates its two main distinctive characteristics: Sabbath observation on the seventh day (i.e. Saturday) and an expectation that the end of the world is drawing near.

The Religious Society of Friends is a name used by a range of independent religious organizations which all trace their origins to a Christian movement in mid 17th century England and Wales. “A central belief was that ordinary people could have a direct experience of the eternal Christ.”2 Today, the theological beliefs among the different organizations vary, but include broadly evangelical Christians, liberal Protestant, Christian universalist and non-Christian universalist beliefs. Some of these organizations also use the name Quaker or Friends Church.

Adverse childhood experiences are major risk factors for the leading causes of illness and death as well as poor quality of life in the United States. That is the finding from The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, one of the largest investigations ever conducted on the links between childhood maltreatment and later-life health and well-being. The ACE study is a collaborative effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente’s Health Appraisal Clinic in San Diego, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). HMO members undergoing a comprehensive physical examination provided detailed information about their childhood experience of abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction. Over 17,000 members chose to participate.1

“We are a single flock under the care of a single shepherd. There is no separate Church for persons with disabilities. Each person is created in God’s image, yet there are variations \in individual abilities.”1
