Welcome to Lindsey Petersen Most Recent Blog Entry

Lindsey_Petersen.jpg
Joy!   Humor!   Heartwarming!   These words describe Lindsey Petersen’s life. She has a BA in Social Work, an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling and advanced courses in Educational Psychology.  While her career as a program director in the rehabilitation field spans thirty-two years, the real meaning in her life lies in the lives of her children, ages thirteen through twenty-six.   Her oldest and only biological child, Francis, age twenty-six, is legally blind.   He had a very successful childhood, and recently obtained his Ph.D. from Cambridge University with a degree in computer engineering.  He now works in his dream job at a major computer company designing computers for individuals with disabilities.  Her daughter, Dinora, age twenty-five, was adopted from Guatemala and was profoundly deaf, but has since been “healed”.  She has ADD, but with medication has graduated with honors from college and is successful in a job in her field.   Steven’s disabilities are a little more complicated as he was born addicted to heroin and cocaine, and he struggles with ADHD, Asperger’s, OCD, and learning disabilities.  He just turned eighteen years old and has had a rocky transition into adulthood. Fifteen year old Angel’s prenatal exposure was similar to Steven’s but he also had the misfortune of severe early childhood abuse which resulted in the development of Dissociative Identity Disorder, (previously known at Multiple Personality Disorder.)   The youngest child in the family, Marie, is profoundly deaf with ADHD.  Her major difficulties also lie with the effects of early childhood abuse resulting in PTSD.   Lindsey is also the guardian of her younger brother, Curtis, who is legally blind, profoundly deaf, and developmentally delayed due to Rubella Syndrome.

While all of her children have disabilities. Lindsey strives hard to ensure that they live full, happy and inclusive lives. They are successful in school, they participate in sports, they volunteer their time to help others, they talk (or text) on the phone to their friends, and their lives are as “normal” as any other child’s.  Lindsey’s upbeat blog emphasizes the humor that can be found in every day situations and tries to focus on the ability rather than the disability.   5kidswdisabilities.wordpress.com
